Joe has been working as a law enforcement officer for over ten years in the State of Maryland. During that time he has instructed numerous officers in the art of officer survival during their police academy training. He began competing in sports and martial arts at an early age and trained with some of the most respected trainers and athletes in the country. In addition to placing first in numerous tournaments, he is a two time gold medalist in karate for kumite (fighting) in the Garden State Games (the New Jersey State Olympics). He also played varsity football and baseball in high school in a very demanding division that included nationally ranked schools. Joe ended his sports career playing college baseball until he graduated. Joe was also the Strength and Conditioning coach for the William Patterson University men's Division II Ice Hockey team located in Wayne, New Jersey. Due in part to his involvement, the team progressed from a Northeast Division ranking of #6 to being ranked #1 in 2011. In February 2012, the William Patterson University Ice Hockey Team became the Super East Regional Champions for the third consecutive year and placed 3rd in the nation. In October 2011, Joe competed in 2011 World Police and Fire Games in New York City in boxing, placing 4th in his division. Joe has been dabbling in CrossFit-type workouts since his time at the police academy. He pursued his Level 1 certification in 2012 to bring CrossFit to Calvert County. After opening Calvert CrossFit in 2013, he’s never looked back. Joe brings a lifelong interest and experience in fitness training to the clients of Calvert CrossFit and for those who are competing, an understanding of what is required to compete successfully and be a champion.

Luke is retired Navy (22 years in aviation ordinance) and currently works as a career firefighter at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He has been fighting fires since before 9-11 and can tell you exactly where he was when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. He was also an avid gymnast during his childhood and continues to embrace that love of gymnastics while he coaches at St. Mary's Gymnastics Center. Luke randomly stumbled across crossfit.com sometime in 2012 and started just doing the workouts at the Drill Hall on base. After about a year, he completed his Level 1 certification to learn more about CrossFit for himself and to eventually coach and help train others. He is excited and ready to get to work with everyone at Calvert CrossFit!

Amanda currently works as a high school science teacher at Calvert High School. She loves to travel and usually spends her summers with some awesome teacher research experience (working on a fisheries research vessel in the Bering Sea, touring around Germany when they won the 2014 World Cup in soccer, or exploring the west coast by hiking Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens after working at Pacific Northwest National Lab). Amanda moved to southern Maryland in 2012 and joined Calvert CrossFit when it opened in early 2013. She struggled to jump on a 6-inch box or complete push-ups on her knees when she first started, but found it oddly exhilarating to be laid out on her back day after day at the end of a WOD wondering what just happened. She completed her Level 1 certification because she wanted to start a CrossFit Kids program and found herself wanting to coach everyone from kids to teens to adults. CrossFit changed her life and she wants to help others discover the same passion and love for a balanced, healthy lifestyle that may involve kicking butt.

What motivates Amanda?

Meagan started CrossFit in 2012 after moving from New York to southern Maryland. Coming from an athletic background, Meagan played softball in high school followed by track and ultimate Frisbee at Bloomsburg University. One day, Meagan wandered into the original Calvert CrossFit location, which was attached to our local globo gym, “just to see what was going on back there.” She currently works as a health physicist with Exelon Nuclear during the day so she can get in a great WOD at night.

Monte has served in the US military for over 20 years and is currently assigned locally. He has always enjoyed training and participating in various sports. As a high school athlete, he wrestled and ran track and field. After joining the military, he found a love for mountain biking and has explored some incredible locations worldwide. Fitness is a huge requirement in the military; Monte struggled for many years to find a workout program that truly worked for him. In 2012, he heard about CrossFit from a very close friend and in early 2013 he joined the newly opened Calvert CrossFit. Calvert CrossFit and Iron Foundry Athletics (our strength training facility) have changed his life. Monte truly loves coaching. He has coached his son in just about every sport he has participated in throughout the years. Coaching is a definite passion for Monte.

Darren has been CrossFitting since he was 16 years old. His older brother and best friend were training to join the Navy when they introduced him to CrossFit. Darren thought he was in shape because he played hockey and did Olympic lifting at Great Mills High School. After completing the “death by power clean” WOD at 135#, he realized he wasn’t as fit as he originally thought. Darren went on to complete his CrossFit Level 1 certification in 2011, followed by CrossFit Weightlifting. He has been coaching CrossFit for over 4 years and is excited to be here at Calvert. Darren plans to enlist in the Army with the hopes of becoming a combat medic.
